Fear (aka my first blog!)

“Expose yourself to your deepest fear; after that, fear has no power, and the fear of freedom shrinks and vanishes. You are free.” Jim Morrison

In our house this morning fear loomed large. It drove one person to cigarettes (fortunately electric) and the other to a strop and wanting to stay in bed.

Both husband and near teenage son were in a fog of negative thoughts and their gremlins had taken control. All this because they had committed to going sailing!

I admit there are few things more scary than the power of the sea. So what to do and who to be?

First was porridge! All kids (young and old) and especially growing boys become difficult without food.

Second was to be calm and make it all right for son not to go if he didn’t want to. To make it his choice.

Third was to get husband to focus on just how much he does know and how competent he is.

Fourth was accompanying him to the boat house to help him set up. Knowing that I would never be needed!

What happened next? Well before we reached the boat house we were joined by our son. He then agreed to sail with a friend and my husband found another person to crew with.

Later, whilst there will be many stories of near misses and capsizing there will also be the exhilaration of looking fear in the face and conquering it.

As we head back to work after the bank holiday, what have you been avoiding because of fear? What’s behind the fear? Looking stupid, failing, something else? Take a moment to examine what it is and make commitment to taking a step, big or small, to tackling it. Imagine the exhilaration…
