5 Tips To Help You Become More Courageous At Work

Courage is a vital leadership quality. Courageous leaders make the difficult decisions when nobody else will, and command the respect of their teams by driving ahead with complex changes.¬†¬† It isn’t easy to show courage because it means that you have to continually try to do things in different ways. If you’re determined to act more courageously, then consider some of the crucial things you can do differently that can set you apart from your peers.

See problems through to the end

Some problems in the workplace are notoriously difficult to resolve. Broken business processes are often easier to leave alone because so many people have to do things in a different way to get better results. It isn’t a matter of being cleverer or more technically skilled than somebody else. Normally, it’s simply a case that a courageous person’s resolve is stronger, and s/he has the determination to knock down every hurdle until the challenge is addressed. Adapt your mindset, refuse to accept that something cannot be done, and have the courage to fully resolve the problems your team faces.

Never tolerate poor behavior

It’s normally easier to quietly moan about someone than it is to raise the issue with the person directly. Some people would rather work round one of their colleagues than address a poor performance problem at source. It is your responsibility to challenge somebody’s work if it has an impact on your ability to do a good job. The fear of confrontation discourages many people from taking action, but this is not the answer to the problem. Focus on what you need from somebody, and do not rest until you get it.

Balance risks objectively

When you aren’t completely sure what will happen, it often seems safer to take the easy way out and do nothing. This approach is never going to help your career progress, and if you want your boss to know that you are courageous, you need to learn how to balance risks to make the right decisions. If ever you are uncertain about something, consider the worst thing that could happen, and how likely that outcome is. Balance risks objectively, and you will soon learn to trust your experience and judgment.

Learn to ignore your comfort zone

If you are always in your comfort zone, it means that you never take risks, and it also means that you lack courage. It’s easy to do the same thing every day, but it isn’t a good way to develop your skills. Surprise your colleagues and your manager by seeking out new opportunities. Take on new roles and responsibilities, even if you are unsure whether you will like them. Changing your work routine once doesn’t make you courageous. You need to find ways to constantly evolve what you do at work, so that change becomes a new habit.

Beg forgiveness but don’t ask for permission

If you continually seek your boss’s approval before you take action, you are too risk-averse. It’s important that your boss knows that you are always willing to make decisions, and that you are happy for him to measure your performance on that basis. Remember that you won’t always get things right. Everybody gets things wrong from time to time, but if your boss can see that you are willing to make difficult decisions, he will soon look past your mistakes. There’s nothing wrong with messing up, so long as you learn and improve.

It isn’t always simple to define courageous behaviour, but it’s quite easy to see the results. Strong, courageous leaders quickly make changes where other people have perviously¬†failed, and that’s a positive label that all career professionals should strive to wear.
